Work Day - Building Boxes

Three guys from Tarrytown built the first garden box today.  It is not a normal-sized, run of the mill garden box.  My husband, John, says he feels tricked because he thought it would be a 4'x8' box, or maybe 4'x12'.  Randy Ripley decided to get creative on them and they built a box in the shape of the letter C, the longest side is 28 feet!

Above - Jason Bone and John Majors work together.  Below, Randy Ripley working the power saw.
These guys are going to be sore tomorrow.  :)

My question is, what does the "C" stand for?  Compost?  Community?  Carpentry?  Cramps?  Carrots!

And here's the stack of wood for Saturday, March 17.
Go here to see the site plan proposal and get a better feel for what the gardens will look like when completed.

Reminder: we'll be building these again on Saturday, March 17.  Let me know if you can join us: luvmyhub AT gmail DOT com Looking forward to seeing you out there!

Arkansas Flower and Garden Show

Today my kids and I ventured downtown to the Arkansas Flower and Garden Show.  I think you will see by the pictures I wasn't the only one who had a good time.

Career opportunities abounded.  He could have talked in this booth all day.  It was a tree-trimming climbing service.  I asked the vendor about my yellow bellied sapsucker problem, and he seemed to think that it would not kill the tree.  Thankfully I can report that the foil has foiled the bird's efforts.

The highlight of the show was this train display.
Below she's holding a balloon.  We lost 4 today.
The following picture I took because I want something similar (flagstone, pergola, sitting area) at our house.
We did make a few purchases.  I bought several root starts (not sure that's what they're called) for native flowers (read: will withstand heat and poor soil) and will attract hummingbirds and butterflies.  We found a little something unusual for the dads in our lives.

On our way out, of course he needed to sit one last time on the digger.  The little green bicycle pot holder next to him was a splurge for me.

Once home I was motivated to turn under the wheat grass/cover crop in my raised bed.  I'm so happy spring is here!!!

Plants for Pots

Bo Baker grows "rooted cuttings" in his back yard.

He is looking for  pots and flats. When you buy your spring annuals, save the containers  from the trash and trade with Bo for plants.

He has over 1300 plants at present, about four hundred are will be two year plants this spring, another six hundred will be one year old by June and the rest have been clipped since then. Most of the cuttings are azaleas (at least 20 varieties).  He also has camellias, hollies, privet and a few others.

Bo Baker lives at 1813 Gunpowder.  His phone number is 920-9443

March 17: Work Day Planned

Saturday, March 17 we are planning a work day to build garden boxes.  You can just show up to help.  Or, if you know you will be there to help, please email Julie Majors: luvmyhub AT gmail DOT com.  Julie and her husband, John, are helping to organize the work day - with Randy Ripley.

The reason it helps for you to tell us you are coming: it is our desire to have two person teams to build the boxes.  John and Randy are going to build a sample box next weekend.

What better way to celebrate GREEN on St. Patrick's Day?  :)
