Mulch

Sturbridge's Master Gardener, Charlotte Purdue, scored some free mulch today.
She saw a sign on a Capital City Tree Service truck that said they would donate chipped wood.  So she called and they delivered a giant load!  Bring a wheelbarrow to the garden and help yourself.

Arkansas Flower and Garden Show *this weekend*

You don't want to miss the Flower and Garden Show that starts this Friday at 10am.  I've been the last couple of years and can't wait to go again this year.  Go here for more details.

Kale Survived the Cold

My kale survived the cold snap. Both at "the garden" (above) and next to my house (below). I didn't cover either.
Below is at the garden.  I've been picking leaves from the bottom for months. Next fall I will plant more kale. We love it.
I planted two varieties of kale and both survived.
The above bunch doesn't look so good but it will perk back up as the temps rise.

Below are mustard greens that didn't make it.
I need to give all my boxes some fertilizer as the nutrients wash out of these raised beds quickly.

Seeds at the Dollar Tree

Seed packets are 4 for $1 at the Dollar Tree on Markham. The expiration on the back is December 2014. If you plan to garden in the fall this year, it is wise to purchase seeds in the spring (now) as they are sometimes difficult to find in the fall.

Debbie's Pole Beans

Debbie Poirot has been quite successful with green beans in the garden. She told me today the seeds were saved from last year (as well as her okra.)

Harvest Bags

Jim and Margaret Ault have been hard at work ...again.  I'm so thankful they keep us supplied in bags!

What to Plant?

Bill Burgin posted on the gazebo a planting guide that he downloaded from the Cooperative Extension Service.  It tells what to plant and when to plant it in Arkansas.  Thanks, Bill!
